Art Portfolio - Ethic in art

During today's Art Portfolio lessons we watched a short movie and talked about one of the works Andres Serrano which is called Immersion (Piss Christ) from 1987. It showed crucified Jesus in gold and blood colours which makes a beautiful light and gives a mysterious vibe. I think if the author did not put that name (Piss Christ) of his work then this photo will not be as controversial as it is. It will be just another really pretty piece of art among lots of pretty work. It may offend someone's religion but I do not think that this what author has on thought during making it. Thank's to not being afraid of taking a hard not often used motives such as showing people dark sides, which should not exist for example Pops which always was treat like a saint. To be honest, I think that's why his art becomes so popular, people want to know who did such a thing, comment it not often positively, know what exactly author create it and why.

I think nowadays art should be controversial because it is hard to exist as an artist if we are not known even just a little. Being innovative, having a little bit of imagination and making things against other people thinking because we always have to be honest with ourself make us... well just us that's why in every century was someone whose is known till today. As long as we do not hurt any people and art they do not suffer from it being open-minded on different ideas is good. In my opinion, a good example of it is Banksy whose work we can see in a lot of walls in the world he is showing things which one people do not want to see or maybe they see it but do not do anything with it. In his art, via using different methods we can see news very often in a humorous way or about politics.

  1. As an artist it is important to consider the nature of what you create and the effect it might have on the viewer. It is okay to be honest and speak your mind as an artist but also to be aware of the effect that might have on the people that see your work. Humour is an important element in breaking down barriers and making people think differently about a variety of issues. This was a thoughtful post.
